“What are the beatitudes, and why are they important?”

The beatitudes are a guide of how to be truly and eternally happy; the word “blessed” refers to the happiness that only God can provide.  Unfortunately, many have taken these beatitudes out of their original context; it is important to remember that the world is a fallen place full of sin.

The world seeks happiness in the temporary, and does not recognize its need for a savior, and as a result, can never truly or fully be satisfied. The world’s attitude keeps them unhappy. They do not see that they are sinners and in need of a savior, they do not mourn over their brokenness, nor hunger for the righteousness that they lack, they do not recognize the mercy of God, and therefore do not bestow it upon others.

The beatitudes describe a state of mind, knowledge, and a state of brokenness. Through this brokenness, through this need of Christ, we find our peace and contentment. When, as Christians, we recognize everything that has been done for us, we cannot help but rejoice at the mercy and love given to us.

Prayer:
Lord, give me a broken spirit. Help me every day to see what you accomplished on the cross, and what it means for me. Thank you for paying the ultimate price so that I may know you. Help me to better love those that I am surrounded by, and open their eyes to their own need of you.
